Product Development Engineer – Electricity

The Role

  • The Product Development Engineer will join the Electricity team within the Product Development department and is responsible for developing Electricity products to satisfy the needs of the business, whilst meeting the Buster + Punch high standards for quality, innovation and style.
  • You will play a crucial role in the design and development of electricity products, including switches, sockets and IoT devices.
  • You must have experience in producing 3D CAD models and scrutinising 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
  • You will be facilitating all stages of the project stages and therefore be accountable for project success, so a passionate and hands-on attitude to get the job done is a must.
  • You will work closely with the Category Manager for Electricity to understand the business case and Product Design Specification, ensuring that products adhere to the requirements set out at the initiation of the project.
  • You will report into the Head of Product Control, and you will ensure all new products follow our product development process. In addition, all critical product related decisions must be agreed with the Heads of Product Control and Management.
  • You will work closely with the Head of Product Control and ensure that the certification needs of the products are addressed accordingly, and that engineering disciplines are being followed, with evidence gathered to demonstrate the product meets the project requirements.
  • You will be the point of contact and professional face of the Buster and Punch Brand when communicating with our suppliers on your projects.
  • You will be empowered to identify opportunities for improvement – processes, design methodologies, technology, and cost optimisation.
  • International travel will be required.

Responsibilities

You will be fully responsible for:

  • Ensuring the Product Design Specification is communicated to and understood by our manufacturing partners.
  • Working at pace to technically develop a product from concept through to manufacture.
  • Using your skills and expertise to overcome technical challenges, whilst obtaining agreement and sign-off from key stakeholders where required.
  • Fully defining the project, this includes specifying relevant milestones which ensure the project progresses smoothly and timely.
  • Managing projects from start to finish, on time and in line with the product development process and development guidelines. You must know the status of your projects, and you will be responsible for communicating delays or challenges, along with providing your recommendations on how to resolve.
  • Utilising company project management software to ensure dates and progress are up to date and accurate, with an appreciation for the impact across departments.
  • Liaising with suppliers to obtain quotations and timelines for manufacture, including tooling, assembly, testing, certification costs, packaging and/or any other costs which may impact the business case.
  • Understanding the test requirements for the project, including durability on both construction and finish, to meet relevant criteria, and ensuring this is executed.
  • Create checklists alongside the Quality Control team to define pass/fail criteria.
  • Checking and testing of prototypes and samples using a DVP (design validation plan) to ensure reliability targets for the product have been met. Knowledge of FMEAs is highly desirable.
  • Working closely with the QC Officer and Commercial Compliance Manager to ensure your projects have the correct documentation.
  • Collating and maintaining correct technical documentation for your projects with the agreed naming conventions and filed correctly, following best working practices for managing any changes effectively.
  • Manage all samples to ensure they are evaluated, labelled and stored correctly.
  • Preparing the relevant reports/updates with the required level of detail to support gated sign-off meetings.
  • Ensure packaging is suitable for the product and able to meet global transit requirements
